man looking at car dent

Chicago drivers love their 2020 Hyundai Veloster and want to keep them looking like-new for as long as possible. While it’s rare to have damage severe enough to require a visit to the Patrick Hyundai collision center, small dents and scratches are part of daily driving in the Arlington Heights area. If you know how to fix a small dent in a car and fix scratches on car surfaces, you’ll save time and money.

How to Fix Scratches on a Car

When you’re able to fix scratches on car surfaces, they’re usually just in the clear coat. Here’s how to fix scratches on a car:

  1. Clean the area with soapy water and a towel.
  2. Tape off the scratch.
  3. Sand the scratch down. If your fingernail catches when you run it over the scratch, use 3000 grit sandpaper. If it doesn’t, use 5000 grit. Spray the scratch and the sandpaper with water.
  4. Sand against the grain of the scratch. Continue respraying and sanding the scratch until it disappears.
  5. With a microfiber towel, use a swirling motion to add “fine” polish onto the area. Use a microfiber towel to remove any excess polish and lightly buff the surface.
  6. Add wax to the surface to protect your clear coat.

How to Fix a Dent in a Car

How to fix a small dent in a car? It’s relatively easy! When you look at how to fix a dent in a car, there are two methods:

  • Pick up a suction cup dent puller from your Elk Grove Village auto store or parts department to pull out the dent.
  • Remove the body panel when you’re trying to fix a dent in car. Use a hairdryer to heat the dent for several minutes. Take a mallet and knock the dent back into place. The heat from the dryer expands the metal making it easier to be pushed back into shape.
